Summary/Abstract: Voluntary service as a phenomenon belonging to the sphere of social activity gets more and more popular in the last decade. This is proven, for example, by an increase in the number of voluntary service initiatives with a national and international range. A careful analysis of the phenomenon of voluntary service in Byelorussia allows one to state that the voluntary service movement in that country is getting ever stronger. With every year the number of volunteers grows, and their work is ever more conspicuous. Voluntary work is met with appreciation and approval in the Byelorussian society, especially among young people. Free voluntary work may be an important factor facilitating the development of non-government organizations, which is an important element of forming a democratic society.
