Summary/Abstract: From the volume L’Europa di Benedetto nella crisi della cultura, Cantagalli, 2005 The article starts by pointing out the double threat that hunts us today: the terrorist menace and the perspective of a global war against terror that would lead to total control from the state over the human person. But there is another new fact in today’s world: the possibility for human beings to produce and modify genetically other human beings. It seems that, while our powers have grown stronger than ever, our morality has become more fragile. This fact is more acute regarding Europe: the ‘old continent’ is the one who developed the strongest Christian culture, but it is also the one who developed the strongest critique of Christianity, the rationalistic tradition that rules today. The greatest danger comes today from this rationalistic tradition which reduces man to nothing but his calculating abilities and cuts off his Christian origins. The possible solution doesn’t reside in eliminating our Illuminist tradition, but, on the contrary, in recognizing its familiarity with the Christian tradition.
