Summary/Abstract: Social Work did not appear in Spain until the 20th century. This delay was due to the slowness of the industrialization process. The social protection systems that where born at the beginning of the century had a charitable nature and were influenced by both the catholic thought and the European social policies of the moment. In this context the assistance programs in which the first social assistants worked came up.
