Summary/Abstract: A review of the play Cutting Timber, directed by Krystian Lupa (Schauspielhaus Graz, premiere: 10.01.2014). The author describes the genesis of Thomas Bernhard's novel, which is the record of the author's (and narrator's) observations during an "artistic supper" on the day of the funeral of a mutual friend, Joanna, and notes the similarity to The Wedding by Stanisław Wyspiański - which is also visible in Lupa's production. The main topic of the staging, artistic (co)existence, also gives Cutting Timber something in common with Lupa's recent plays – particularly Factory 2. Krzywicka-Kaindel believes the success of the play is owing to both the masterful direction and the skill of the actor ensemble.
