Summary/Abstract: Colleague of Nicoară BELDICEANU at the beginning of his scientific career, Ion MATEI belonged to the “gold” generation of the Romanian ottomanists, together with Aurel DECEI, Mustafa A. MEHMET and Mustafa GUBOGLU. As orientalist and ottomanist, he studied various aspects of the Islamic culture, the impact of Ottoman-Turkish civilization on the Balkans, and the relations between the Ottoman Empire and the Romanian principalities. Ion MATEI constantly followed the way drew by Aurel DECEI, who started to emphasize Islamic juridical framework concerning the Ottoman-Romanian relationships. In his few but accurate studies, he pointed out how good results can be obtained by joining in the same person the historical training with the juridical one.
