Summary/Abstract: There are two terms often mentioned in connection with the films of Private Hungary and home movies: one is film diary, the other one is private film. From what aspect do these two terms describe amateur films? The private film is the sociological or anthropological context of the creation, possession and use of the film -- thus it is not related to the content. This is what distinguishes it from the public film. It is all about the separation of the private and the public spheres. Things for the public are subject to such preliminary dramaturgic, ideological and political consideration, which is not obligatory in the private films. In this latter one anything from the banal to the intimate can appear and be of significance, anything that is an irrelevant, ephemeral event for the official historiography. The public film, however, bears the weight of the public.
