The Comparison Between Holocaust and Gulag: References for a Debate

Summary/Abstract: Originating from the improper comparison, impregnated by a negationist frame of mind, between Holocaust and Gulag, this text points out the main moments of the debate concerning communist and nazi totalitarianism, locating them in their historical context, and evoking also the monolithic aspect of the translations and introductions available in Romanian. Against the misuse of the comparative method through media exploitation and extreme politicization, against impoverishment through nationalist or ethnocentric intellectual competition, the author pleads for the contextualization of both historical phenomena and moral judgments referring to it. The argument consists in the observation of the differences between the three competing ”civilian religions” (Holocaust, antifascism and anticommunism), and of the tendency to transform the anticommunist counter-ideology in a new dominant ideology and of the reversal of the historical and ethical paradigm in the Romanian context.
