Summary/Abstract: Many people think that there is a question of timing in any attempt to disclose, to publicly discuss a difficult past. Some believe that the time has not yet come to embark on such a discussion which can endanger the national morale. On the contrary, some are convinced that the right moment has already passed and there is no point in discussing further on. I think that one cannot impose limitations of any kind in studying the past and its dire events or in making public the results, no matter how unpleasant they may sound and no matter what objections of timing one may raise. Therefore I welcome the reports of both Wiesel and Tismaneanu commissions. On the other hand I am skeptical about the usefulness and the equity of a proposed lustration law.
