Summary/Abstract: To put it shortly, if, as I shall argue, the central dimension of totalitarianism is criminal violence or the concept of politics as a perpetual war, then we are amazed both by the intensity of totalitarian violence under Lenin and Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot, and by the absence of violence in Gorbachev’s capitulation on the foreign front and in the subsequent dissolution of the Soviet Union itself.
