Summary/Abstract: The distinction between totalitarianism and totalism does not exclude a high degree of convergence, most notably when the totalism dynamic constitutes an element of support within a regime that is institutionally totalitarian such as those of the People’s Republic of China and Cuba. If one can speak of a sliding towards or away from totalism in cases such as these, one can also note a fusion with the goals aspired to in classic totalitarianism, especially with respect to establishing a homogeneous society in which pluralism and opposing points of view have been eliminated.
