Summary/Abstract: A teacher of civics fulfils a significant role in civic education. His/her competences determine, to a large extent, the quality of preparing young people for the role of citizens actively participating in social life. The analyses carried out in this article aim at demonstrating – on the basis of available education law documents and the literature of the subject – the importance of a civics teacher’s competence in the process of effective civic education. To begin with, attention is paid to the semantic range of terms: “teacher’s competence” and “civic education”. Next, the relations between a civics teacher’s competence and effective civic education are described. This context is used to characterize methods for improving the competence of civics teachers, necessary for effective civic education.
