Summary/Abstract: By providing insight into the curricula of music courses in primary and secondary schools, as well as into Standards for Music Education (Ministry of Education, 2007), which accurately reflect the current state of Serbian music education in the 21 st century, this paper shows that one of the requirements of modern music pedagogy practices is music listening. Thisis an active process, which, at the highest level of the projected and expected scope of the education system, i.e. during the final stage of education, presumes that a student can name the expressive elements and identify the connection between the perceived characteristics and the structure, dramaturgy, genre, and historical-stylistic dimension of a given audio sample. The very nature of listening to music clearly indicates a mastery of complex cognitive and emotional processes. A teacher’s proper planning and adequate pedagogical strategies in the process of teaching greatly affect the formation and development of students’ personalities. In addition to the educational, professional, and social goals that are accomplished, there are other goals, which refer to the shaping and development of the individual’s personal capacity and emotional and aesthetic growth, and which can be crucial for stimulating or blocking the learning process. Music perception is attainable only through conscious and effective perception of successive audio segments and their organization into a unified whole.
