Summary/Abstract: In the past twenty years entrepreneurship has had an increasing impact on the post-socialist societies. Therefore, it warrants greater attention from sociological scholars. Setup and development of new businesses is a complex process determined by multiple factors. The motives that drive individuals to start their own companies are considered very important for this process. Referring to the relevant research, both domestic and international, this paper attempts to determine the key motives for the setup of small and medium-sized businesses in the post-socialist countries. According to the results, the most important start-up motive in Montenegro is unemployment.
