Summary/Abstract: Salary is the transformation of human capital into products of labour. The value of work is the source of the salary. In all international documents dealing with social issues, each person's rights to work and to receive an equitable salary are listed among top priorities. An objective measure for computing salaries is crucial in the socio-economic context. In reality, however, theories are insufficient, the practice is that of arbitrariness, and we are still haunted by the belief that threat of unemployment is a sufficient motivation for good work. Today, such an approach to remuneration is certainly inadequate. We are facing an increasing emphasis on the growing share of labour costs in the total product cost, and the related individualisation of labour, which is largely dependent upon the value of human capital, and the compensation for investment risk. Therefore the salary an employee receives should be in harmony with the value of work created by him or her, i.e. the energy she or he had expended. As a result, the value of human capital will be maintained, as salaries will generate a stream of income that shall provide a sufficient rate of return on the employee capital. Properly defined wages facilitate retention of the capital and preclude its depreciation. The concept of capital preservation leads us to see wages as a value resulting from the application of a right and proper rate of return to the capital assigned to a given employee. Based on capital theory, we may determine a proper standard of wages for particular employee categories; and on those grounds, we may assess whether the given organisation supports the enhancement and development of social capital.
