Summary/Abstract: In the two historically different processes of standardization the 16th century and the 19th century, the creation of national languages followed different principles. The first period produced languages based on a centralised written norm. The second period was characterized by a variety of symbolically charged options, of which the American and the Norwegian examples are discussed. The postcolonial experience of national language norms with non-symbolic functional languages used parallel to ethnic languages is seen as a third period of standardization. It is also suggested that future developments are likely to lead to multilingual communication systems.
