Summary/Abstract: Scholars tend to avoid the subject of Słowacki's ballads because they believe in the poet's reluctance to this genre. There are however some ballads among Słowacki's works, though they are not numerous. It is worth noticing that Słowacki did not follow Mickiewicz's lead – he chose Zaleski not Mickiewicz to be his patron, he looked for Scottish not German inspiration, he prefered Ukrainian to Lithuanian and Byelorussian folklore. The author of the article analyses Słowacki's works that can be classified as ballads, indicates their originality and explains how the poet deconstructs the ballad convention.
