Summary/Abstract: Until Basel II, operational risk was part of a residual category of risks which were diffi cult to identify, quantify and manage in traditional ways. The great importance given today to operational risk management can be understood as a particular expression of a general climate of regulatory attention to organisational internal control systems. Despite of its inherent impact on bank’s activity, there are many controversies regarding the current approach of operational risk management due to some contested domains, such as: defi nitional issues, data collection and the limits of quantifi cation. Near future will be a proofi ng testimonial on whether the approach on including operational risks under Pillar I will be validated by the practice or not.
