Summary/Abstract: In his unfinished paper "de gravitatione et aequipondio fluidorum" Isaac Newton develops the fundamental concepts of his mechanics, i. e. space, movement and inertia, within a critical discussion of Descartes' Principles of Philosophy. They form a philosophical foundation which must be presupposed for the mathematical mechanics of the Principia Mathematica Philosophiae Naturalis, but are no longer discussed in this book.
