Summary/Abstract: It is the thesis of the author th at there is a special relationship between Social Behaviour and National Consciousness as far as the preservation of the latter in immigrants is concerned. The author would like to think that there are at least three main components of Social Behaviour that are abvious in the stated relationship — Political, Economic, and Cultural. The article discusses briefly the first one in the case of Bulgarian Immigration in the U. S. A. from the beginning of this century until the early 60-ies. The author motivates why the Bulgarian traditional term "historic consciousness'" should be replaced by a wider, more modern one — "national consciousness" to correspond to the democratic changes which are taking place in the country now. The causality for Bulgarians emigrating abroad is related to John F. Kennedy's formulation of the universal reasons: Religious persecution, Political oppresion and Economic hardship. The article goes into the story of the political behaviour of the Bulgarians giving evidence for their participation in American political and social life, the publishing of various Bulgarian political newspapers, the main ideological and political trends which characterize the division of the immigrants after a totalitarian government was established in Bulgaria following the end of World War II.
