Summary/Abstract: Every era has its own myths. Myths play an important role in shaping the system of intellectual thought. However, conscientious utilisation of myth in history ultimately leads to a science that includes in itself elements of falsity as well as truth. Historiography, which is influenced by politics, interprets historical events on the basis of daily developments; historical figures, tendencies and approaches are presented to others in light of a hypothetical danger or in light of the benefit it may create in relation to current issues, ultimately turning the past into a talisman of the present. This paper considers some of the well-established historiographical myths about Islam and Muslims. Such myths include: myths about an inferior race, myths about incomplete cultures and civilisations, as well as myths about swords and violence.
