Summary/Abstract: In this paper, I insist on using the Russian concept kul’turologija, in spite of the seeming affinity of its rise to the ‘cultural turn’ that has taken place in the last two decades in social and cultural studies in Western academia, particularly in the Englishspeaking world. Before engaging in a discussion of this affinity, I want to describe the main trends of, and explain the driving forces behind, the culturological discourse in Russia and point out the reason for the social demand it tries to meet. Following on this clarification, it will be possible to draw a comparison between kul’turologija and the prominence of various forms of culturalism or the new cultural history in Western countries.
