Summary/Abstract: The article describes the main principles of functioning of the mandatory occupational pension schemes in selected European countries, from the point of view of the employee and the employer, taking into account also the programs that feature automatic enrolment in these plans. The studies suggest that company pension schemes may be mandatory, quasi mandatory, as well as there might be semi-optional programs. The participation in the program is often associated with being of the certain age by an employee, getting a particular level of incomes or being employed in a given sector. Employees who are not covered by the obligation to participate in the market for this type of programs can participate in them on a voluntary basis.
