Summary/Abstract: The text begins with an observation on the crisis of theoretical and historical reflection related to the cinema, and on the crisis of the humanities in general (Roger Odin, Francesco Cassetti, Thomas Elsaesser). In this context the artistic undertaking of Jean-Luc Godard’s film essay "Histoire(s) du cinéma" is interpreted in light of its historical and theoretical aspects. Here the author emphasises in particular the practice of archaeology of cinema (outlined by Ishagpour) and the history of the twentieth century as a clear manifestation of building a methodological, theoretical and historical reflection. Kita sees a unique role in the director’s ability to reorganise the archival material in the spirit of the work of anamnesis (Alain Bergala). Godard carries out the project of history told in a manner revealing areas of theoretical reflection. His “essay” is an emanation of the delicate power of art (Céline Scemama) conditioned by montage techniques organising pictorial matter so as to reconstruct an outline of art theory and history of the age as seen through the lens of a cinematograph.
