Summary/Abstract: The article defines iconoclasm as all sorts of protest against images, and at the same time draws attention to the joint etymological roots of the word obraz (image) and obraza (offence). Next, by referring to Bruno Latour’s conception of iconoclash – and considering the attack launched against Maurizio Catellan’s The Ninth Hour - it shows the proximity of iconoclasm and iconophilia. The key question posed in the text concerns the possible reaction to the iconoclastic gesture of the artistic image, which at the same time wishes to possess the power of social impact and to retain inviolability resulting from its status of high art.
