Summary/Abstract: In 1844 Elias Lönnrot, author of the Finnish epic Kalevala, took a walking tour through Estonia, and, having seen the circumstances in which Estonians lived, wrote that he would never choose to live there, not even for a day, and not even for a high salary. One hundred years later, in 1944, approximately 75, 000 people fled Estonia. There were a great deal more who wished to flee – at least a tenth of the population, but, as it was said in those days – the white ship never came. The origin of the Estonian local myth of the white ship can be traced to the beginning of the 19th century.
