Summary/Abstract: The essay explores one of the Russificatory measures undertaken by the imperial authorities in the western provinces (the lands of the former Rzeczpospolita) after the January Uprising. The essay concludes that the architects of the Russificatory policy toward Roman Catholicism in the empire, for all their modern thinking about the priority of the national over the confessional, continued to be implicitly committed to the traditional religious definition of Russianness, i. e. the equation of being Russian with being Orthodox.
