Summary/Abstract: This article is dealing with source evidence on religious conflicts which followed immediately the proclamation of the Church Union of Brest in 1595-1596. Records from sejm's and sejmiki's deliberations, data on conflicts within the clergy, first traces of Cossacks' and peasants' involvement in these struggles show that this confessional confrontation was generated by the Church Union of 1595-1596. Nothing impedes to qualify these conflicts as a "war of religion" that as such was analogous to religious clashes of the same epoch in Western and Central Europe.
