Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the history of the notion "intermediality" in Russian and world science. Since the very beginning ofthe media studies, the polysemy of the term "media" together with the multiplicity of scientific discourses, within which media research has been conducted, have determined the existing variety in understanding media and their interaction - intermediality. According to two aspects of understanding "media" - technological and semiotic - two perceptions of "intermediality" emerge. Moreover both of these perceptions include further differentiations within themselves. The variety of perceptions results in ambiguity ofthe term "intermediality" and impedes shaping of a common approach to intermediality.
