Summary/Abstract: Challenge and cost of Christian unity; Biblical roots in John 17, where the ‘New Temple’ image for the church is implied; the challenge of Acts, where Jew and Gentile struggle to come together in Christ; of Paul’s letters, again with strong Temple-imagery; the question of adiaphora – how do we know which things ‘do not make a difference’? – the reason why some styles of behaviour are not ‘adiaphora’, and the challenge to the church to a properly grounded unity, not an easy-going ‘tolerance’. Today’s challenge: to discern what really unites us, what still divides us, and which of the latter may in fact be adiaphora.
