Summary/Abstract: The article is a debate with the rector of the catholic university in Erfurt professor Tiefensee that was held on the tenth meeting of European Forum for religious education at state schools. The author finds the resemblance of the widely held atheism in the Czech Republic and in countries of the former German Democratic Republic. On the contrary she opposes the professor’s opinion that the disappearance of religious life’s aspects doesn’t decrease the quality of social life in our society. She supports her opinion with researches in area of developmental psychology with the focus on depth psychology. She concludes, that the church’s evangelistic struggle should precede a pursuit for opening the people’s spiritual dimension, which she identifies as the religions dimension in the broadest meaning of the word. This aim should be primarily expressed in the aims, contents and methods of the subject religious education in state schools. It is one of the ways through which the Roman Catholic Church could serve the society in the endeavour to gradually find the people’s spiritual dimension. Nevertheless she claims that activities of theological universities up till now don’t contribute to such programs and that the church doesn’t require them.
