Summary/Abstract: The distinction between obligatory and optional punctuation rules makes us discuss the basis for such distinction as well as more general issues concerned with the principles of distinction. Principles given in the literature on applied linguistics focus on two major language functions: representation and communication. When no leading principle is selected, the set of rules does not look very consistent. The innovations of reviewed rules make it easier to apply them, especially when they are concerned with punctuation exercising more freedom and clearly aim at communicative purposes.
