Attitudes towards the standard language and the dialect: the case of Joniškėlis

Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the attitudes of the population of Joniškėlis towards the standard language, local and other dialects. The sociolinguistic investigation helped identify that the population of Joniškėlis, regardless of their opinion about their own proficiency level of the standard language, admit that the standard language has more overt prestige than dialects. However, active use of the dialect in a private sphere points to the covert prestige of the dialect.
