Summary/Abstract: The author deals with problems of social and ethnic stratification. Regarding social stratification, he points to a fast class and stratum polarisation, generated by the increased importance of economic capital. On the other hand, the new nation state causes occurrences of ethnic stratification (immigrants pushed into an underprivileged position). Tolerant ethnic pluralism and interculturalism seem unlikely at the moment.
