Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes Vilém Flusser’s media theory as a typical example of the so-called visual turn in contemporary social sciences and humanities. Attention is focused on two methodological problems which arise for Flusser’s theory and for the whole visual discourse. First, the problem of localization of visual turn: it is not clear whether it takes place in socio-cultural reality or in contemporary social sciences and humanities; second, the problem of the novelty of an object and the method of visual studies and a relationship between them. Flusser understands visual turn as a change in socio-cultural reality. However, the author argues that this change is perceived and outlined only with the help of the speculative dialectic method of the classical philosophy of history, chosen by Flusser.
