On Contemporary Interpretations of Božena Němcová’s Life and Work

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyse the relationship between ideology and literature (as an integral part of cultural life) on the example of national hero Božena Němcová. In this paper we briefly discuss the history of ideological exploitations of this well-known 19th century writer, as was the ideology of Czech national revival and communist propaganda. We then focus on the contemporary interpretations of Němcová’s life and work and the role of feminist literary criticism and gender studies, both part of the post revolutionary Czech literary and cultural life, on the formation of the new public image of the Czech most famous female author.
