Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to illustrate the meaning and function of numbers in compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, on the basis of "Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit" ("Actus tragicus") BWV 106 cantata. Though only one field where the numbers occur and one particular vocal piece have been selected as subjects to analysis, many conclusions applying generally to the whole preserved legacy of the great Leipzig cantor can be drawn. With regard to the symbolics of numbers used, one basic question arises: whom were they addressed to? The answer is quite unambiguous — to the performer. They are almost entirely meaningless to the listener, and they cannot be detected during listening. The performer, however, deciphering numeric symbols acquires additional knowledge which helps him/her convey the composer's intentions more consistently and gain more complex perception of the musical work, on the basis of which he/she develops his/her own interpretation of it. The author of the present study can confirm that with his own interpretative experiences, as it was often the focus on particular numeric symbols that helped him solve the basic issues and problems of interpretative-philosophical nature. It is worth noting, however, that the meaning of numeric symbols should not be overrated and uncritically emphasised.
