Summary/Abstract: Legends about Giants and Water Buffalo fight originating from the Viilage of Staro selo, the Region of Tutrakan – as a Link of the Sacred Relationship to the Demir Baba Cult Centre / The article presents for the first time the village of Staro selo in the “hartzoi” ethnographic area in the Northeast of Bulgaria. Thus it gets included in the context of legends about sacred characters such as Demir Baba known as a saintly hero both for the Muslims and the Christians. The riverbed of the dried up Demir Baba River connects the „Demir Baba teke“ cult centre with the village and emphasizes the sacred past relationships. Recorded by the author in 2004, newly built folk narratives concerning giants and water buffalo fights have been placed in the same context. The folk legends demonstrate the “water buffalo” character’s presence in the region which is new to the ethnologists. A key issue of the atricle is that the narratives supported by field work recording have been related to texts about Demir Baba written by Boris Iliev. His creative work has been a basic source for the story cycle featuring the local saintly hero.
