Summary/Abstract: The western Eucharistic theology tried to give an answer to the question of Christ’s real presence in the sacrament of Eucharist, and more exactly to the manner in which the bread and wine become the body and the blood of our Savior. The reviewing of the most important contributions to this topic (Paschasius Radbertus, Ratramnus, Beregnar of Tours, Lanfranc of Bec, Lothario of Segni/Innocent III, Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus and William Ockham) is useful in understanding the position taken by the pre-reformer John Wyclif. He rejects the offi cial teaching of the Catholic Church regarding the Eucharist, the transubstantiation, and although he accepts Christ’s real presence in Eucharist (Christ is really present in three ways: virtual, spiritual and sacramental), he also maintains that „something” of the two (bread and wine) remains aft er the consecration, doctrine known as „remanence”. This article focuses on John Wyclif’s Eucharistic doctrine, trying to point out the new elements brought by him and also their analysis.
