Summary/Abstract: Questioning is the most common method of obtaining data when researching a specific problem or social reality. It is contingent on the evolution of human consciousness, speech and competence in meaningful communication, and constitutes a direct and indirect means of obtaining empirical data. It is a direct means because verbal communication between the enquirer and the respondent is immediate; and indirect because in providing answers to the questions, the respondent necessarily mediates between the specific phenomena or problems under investigation and the findings. It should be made clear that the data obtained by this means are the product of the respondent’s personal experience, knowledge and discoveries, and the result of his or her subjective observation of certain manifestations of social phenomena in the social reality, as well as of the meanings he or she attributes to them. The paper draws attention to the importance of the enquiry method, its feasibility, applicability, advantages and shortcomings as a research tool.
