Summary/Abstract: The central focus of this paper is to determine empirically whether the perception of ethnic collectivities differs from that of the individuals in those collectivities. The study was conducted among grade 3 pupils at the grammar schools in Mostar, Banja Luka and Sarajevo. As regards the perception of the collectivity, we obtained the exact results we expected – that the respondents hold uncritical views of their own ethnic group but that their views of other ethnic groups depend on current political relations between the political elites. It would seem, however, that their animosity and stereotypical views of other ethnic groups do not extent to their individual relations with members of other ethnic groups. Presumably ethnic affiliation is not as important in individual contacts, particularly within this age group, as are other more compelling interests (sport, music, films, books, video games and so on). We should not rule out the possibility either that high-school pupils’ aesthetic preferences are not greatly influenced by ethnic affiliation.
