Word formation in dialects vs. dialect forming word formation

Summary/Abstract: In the context of complex and sometimes controversial problems of word formation, we make here an attempt to sketch out the directions and methods of research on word formation in the regional varieties of Polish national language. A possibility is indicated to describe, to a certain extent, the structural and geographical differentiation as it appears in historical materials. We draw the reader’s attention, moreover, to the necessity of collecting up to date linguistic data, and of their interpretation from the point of view of the function of the derived categorial and semantic forms, which paves the way for a more adequate representation of word formation as a carrier of semantic function. We call for a more systematic research, which should lead to obtaining more comparable results.
