Summary/Abstract: The work deals with the subject of translating from Finnish into Polish expressions connected with the cultural uniqueness and realities of Finland. The first part of the article concentrates on the issue of translatability/non-translatability of communication. In the second part, the author puts emphasis on the close bond existing between language and culture, giving numerous examples of expressions referring to the world of nature, material and spiritual culture, the sphere of human psyche, which constitute barriers to translation from Finnish into Polish. The author concludes that a significant part of such expressions is characterised by high degree of hermetic quality in relation to meaning. Problems of transposing Finnish lexical-semantic code into Polish also appear in such places where apparent counterparts and analogies seem to exist in the language of translation. Partial non-translatability of expressions referring to unfamiliar entities from civilizational, institutional, moral, social and other circles is not only connected with the dissimilarities of both Polish and Finnish lexical systems but also with the differences in the way of perceiving and categorizing the existing world by representatives of the two societies.
