Summary/Abstract: The article looks into the photograph book by Pierre Jahan and Jean Cocteau – La mort et les statues – and into the analysis of its translation from French into Polish. Jahan’s photographs represents the act of destruction of Parisian sculptures in 1941. Cocteau’s poetic captions seems to be easy to translate – the problem of cultural barriers appears on the level of reception. The focus is placed on the different image of Second World War rooted in French and Polish consciousness.
