Summary/Abstract: Following the 1888 fire, which destroyed Iaşi’s theatre building in Copou, the city was deprived of one of its most important cultural establishments. Two years later, the issue of the construction of a new building was brought up by professor Miltiade Tzoni in the national Assembly of Deputies and due to his sustained efforts, a loan of 800 000 lei was secured. However, unsatisfied with the inital building plans, the City Council of Iaşi contacted the Fellner & Helmer architecture firm based in Vienna. The two experts stated that the expenses for a theatre which would match the city’s size and cultural status were to reach approximately 1.400.000 lei. Our scientific attempt focuses mainly on the difficulties related to the local administration’s efforts to obtain more financial support from the government and from the Romania’s central loan bank.
