Summary/Abstract: For historians, census represents the primary source of huge importance for the reconstitution and evaluation of some realities and phenomena of the past, including comparative analysis, when such sources, produced during a certain era, are in considerable numbers. In this paper, some aspects of the development of Curtea de Argeş town from Middle Ages to Modern Era are presented based upon the census from 1834, as well as some pieces of information from censuses from 1773-1774, 1833 and 1838. Though the census from 1834 has only nine sections comparing to the 24 of that from 1838, four of them (i.e. ”since when they have lived in the town” (3), ”where they were coming from (county or country)” (5), ”where they were coming from (village or town)” (6), and ”the social status” (7) are inedited. They complete the section of the census from 1838, contributing to the understanding of the demographical, economical and social realities of Curtea de Argeş town, 178 years ago, an unique situation for all localities from the former counties Argeş and Muscel. The census was useful not only for the Inner Affairs Department, but also for the Treasury Department. The main feature of the town development is the fact that is a slight demographical increasing comparing to 1773–1774, the slow forming of a proto-bourgeoisie, as long as a proper bourgeoisie did not exist, as well as a slight cosmopolitan tendency. Globally speaking, after 1831–1832 Curtea de Argeş was a post-medieval and traditional town with some modern features.
