Summary/Abstract: Circumcision as mechanism for production of otherness in the Hebrew Bible Circumcision is a very old Semitic practice which appeared in a place and time lost back in history. Ancient Israel normalized the rite as a religious law most probably in Vi–V century BCE, after the Babylonian exile. The paper follows the process and explicates the reasons of its sacralization in the biblical world. some paradigmatical stories are put to close analysis: The “cutting” of a covenant between Yahweh and Abraham in Gen. 17; a segment of the narrative of the third patriarch, Jacob, in Gen. 34; one of the military exploits of King David in 1 Sam. 18. The law of circumcision is revealed to be a typical strategy of the so called Priestly document; it aims at drawing clearer boundaries between Israel and its neighbouring peoples of Canaan.
