Encounters and Talking at Cross-Purpuses in “Flowering Rye”

Summary/Abstract: The paper is concerned with the translatability of literary titles and with their specific participation in the intercultural transfer. Special attention is given to the semantic transformations that the title bears in the process of translation into a different cultural system. The case on which the study is focused is G. D. Salinger’s The Cather in the Rye. Numerous translations in different languages with their successes and failures have been compared in the light of the title’s poetics and its semantic potential.
