Summary/Abstract: The practice of Islam represents a textbook illustration of both the appeals and the challenges of liberal neutrality. When we engage intellectually with non-liberal cultural or religious groups over a particular policy dispute and are willing to examine our received beliefs in light of the views they advance, what’s important to us is not the argument put forward from within their ethical traditions, but only arguments that can be translated into a form of public reason. This seems to be the only way to deal with “unreasonable” pluralism. At the same time we shouldn’t forget that the principle of neutrality cannot be accepted by non-liberals without prior injecting a significant dose of liberalism into their system of beliefs.
