Colour Names of the Kazakh Language

Summary/Abstract: The linguistic research of colour names of different languages has recently become very popular. The research of colour names helps us to know the history and development of languages and also the culture and the mind of the native speakers. I study the colour names of the Kazakh language with the method of historical linguistics. For my research I have collected a list of words from different Kazakh dictionaries. The list consists of more than fi ve hundred words, which derive from colour names. In my paper fi rst I give a review about the linguistic studies of colour names, then I introduce the symbolic interpretation of the colours in Kazakh and later the categories and the functions of words which are from colour names. In the focus of my research are compounds of Kazakh language which contain colour names and I study them mainly from the semantic view.
