Tandem (the one-word quotation)

Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with a unique quotation technique, namely quotations which consist of one single word. The investigation is primarily based on album amicorum inscriptions, and focuses on the most frequently used single-word quotation, “tandem”. I describe the route through which the word turned into a notarikon, and show how it was used as a call-word for a particular verse of Psalm 37. I also take a look at the way the word can occasionally become the integral part even of longer passages, transmitting those layers of meaning which it has acquired during its individual usage.
